A personal licence allows someone to sell or supply (or authorise the sale or supply of) alcohol, where a valid premises licence is in place. Having a personal licence dose not allow you to sell alcohol, unless you operate under a premises licence or a temporary event notice.

You do not have to hold a personal licence, to work at a bar or club. Venues may employ multiple licence holders, but can only nominate one designated premises supervisor (DPS). To be nominated as a DPS, an individual must hold a personal licence. The DPS is the point of contact for any of the responsible authorities who wish to discuss licensing matters concerning the premises.

Personal licences are portable. They can be taken and used at venues with a premises licence in England and Wales. Personal licences have no expiration or renewal date. Once granted, they are valid for a lifetime (unless the licence is surrendered, revoked or forfeited – or the licence holder loses the right to work lawfully in the UK)

You need to apply for a personal licence from the local council (or ‘licensing authority’) where you live not the council where the premises is located.

My personal licence course will guide you through the law of licensed premises. At the end of the one-day course, you will sit a 40 question exam. It’s a muti-choice answer type, so relax, there is no essay to write. Smarty pants who pass will score at least 28 question correct.
