A personal licence is a licence granted by the licensing authority to an individual that will authorise that person to sell alcohol in accordance with a premises licence.

A personal licence is not required for the provision of late night refreshment, regulated entertainment, or where alcohol is supplied at premises operating under a club premises certificate (previously a registered club).

Not every person retailing alcohol at premises licensed for that purpose needs to hold a personal licence, but every sale or supply must be authorised by a personal licence holder. Premises may have a number of personal licence holders. But only one is nominated as the Designated Premises Supervisor.

An individual is only permitted to hold one personal licence. No connection with any licensed premises is needed to apply for a personal licence. A licence lasts for an indefinite period of time beginning on the date it is granted.  It can be revoked, declared forfeit or suspended in certain circumstances.

Personal licences are issued by the local authority of the applicant’s home address. Remember, once issued, they do not expire.

A personal licence holder can authorise up to 50 temporary event notices in each calendar year. This is subject to certain restrictions. Non-personal licence holders can only authorise up to five notices.

Personal licences are portable. A licence holder can authorise sales of alcohol in all venues with a premises licence throughout England and Wales.

My one day course covers all elements of the personal licence syllabus, to enable all candidates to feel confident when sitting the end of course examination. Successful candidates will need to score 28 correct questions out of 40. I have a 99% exam pass rate. You will be in safe hands.
